With special guest:
Jai Hobbs
… in conversation with Bill Kable
Covid 19 is just one more hurdle for our young people coming out of school. They already have to face up to serious competition to progress in a chosen career. If they can get through University they face a HECS debt and what about the housing market.
Our guest today Jai Hobbs decided to do something practical to help the young people get on top of all that. With his wife Marlies, Jai has written a manual called FLY which stands for financially literate youth. This is what he is striving for.
Unfortunately financial literacy is not taught at school and surveys have shown that the level of financial literacy in our youth is appallingly low. So first of all we ask Jai what does he mean by the term financial literacy, what are the essentials?
Jai tells us that financial literacy is a skill and like other skills it can be learned. It can be learned from a very young age when kids of say 9 or 10 can become good money managers and then they retain that skill for the rest of their lives.
We learn about a structured approach to budgeting, we learn about the 8th wonder of the world, namely compound interest. We also discuss what to do if it all goes wrong.
Talking to Jai it is obvious that he can draw from many years of experience in life and business. He lets us know how he is applying what he has learned in raising his own children. He now has a passion to help educate all the young people coming out of our schools.
Even the not so young can draw on the lessons taught in this book. If you are starting or running a small business, considering an investment in property or deciding on another type of investment then this book is for you. Reading FLY will allow you to make confident informed financial decisions. And what a good time to be doing that!
